The Opportunity:

The Rig Test Engineer is responsible for planning, organising, and overseeing rig sessions for the race car and its subsystems. This role involves hands-on design and development of test rigs and fixtures while working closely with project technical leads and the extended project team to maximize the effectiveness of each test. The ideal candidate will collaborate with race engineers, designers, and mechanics to optimize vehicle performance, enhance reliability, and ensure compliance with industry regulations.

Role Responsibilities:

Test Planning & Execution

• Develop, organize, and implement test plans for motorsport vehicles and sub-systems
• Set up, configure, and operate test rigs, including dynamometers, suspension rigs, and component test benches.
• Coordinate and conduct on-track and laboratory tests to evaluate vehicle performance, durability, and safety.
• Ensure testing procedures adhere to industry standards and company requirements.

Data Acquisition & Analysis

• Utilize data acquisition systems (e.g., Atlas, System Monitor, etc.) to collect and analyse test data.
• Interpret test results to identify performance enhancements and potential failure points.
• Work with simulation and modelling team to validate test data and compare with theoretical predictions.
• Provide insights to optimize software algorithms for powertrain and vehicle control systems.
Vehicle Development & Optimization
• Support race engineers in refining vehicle sub-systems performance
• Assist in the validation and development of new components and technologies before race implementation.
• Offer technical feedback to design and manufacturing teams to improve component performance, reliability, and durability.

Collaboration & Reporting

• Work closely with cross-functional teams, including designers, race teams, software engineers, and external suppliers.
• Act as a coordinator between the project technical lead and the software team for powertrain dyno testing.
• Prepare comprehensive technical reports on test results, highlighting key findings and recommendations for improvement.
• Ensure all testing complies with relevant motorsport regulations and safety standards.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Automotive Engineering, Motorsport Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience in motorsport engineering, high-performance vehicle development, or automotive testing.
• Familiarity with motorsport regulations and homologation processes.
• Experience in professional motorsport categories such as Formula 1, WEC, WRC, or MotoGP preferred
• Knowledge of composite materials and advanced manufacturing techniques.
• Understanding of hybrid and electric vehicle technologies in motorsport.
• Experience working with automated testing systems and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in data analysis tools such as MATLAB, Simulink and ATLAS.
• Hands-on experience with test rigs, powertrain dynamometers, suspension rigs, and telemetry systems.
• Strong understanding of vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, and powertrain performance.
• Knowledge of control systems, software development processes, and sensor integration is a plus.
Soft Skills
• Excellent problem-solving abilities and keen attention to detail.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, high-performance environment.
• Proactive and adaptable, with a drive to improve testing methodologies and vehicle performance.

Work Environment & Travel

• The role is likely to be based at the Silverstone, Lola Facility with the potential for some flexibility for remote working.
• The role may require travel to test facilities, race tracks, and development centres.
• Fast-paced, high-pressure environment with tight deadlines, especially during race seasons.
• Weekend and long-hour commitments may be necessary to meet testing and development goals.
